Welcome to the BIG TOP! Your circus party is going to be more fun than going to the local fair. This party is all about fun, games, color and excitement. Anything that you think might be over the top, might be exactly what your guests are going to think is the most memorable part of the party. Let your imagination go wild with these party ideas.
To make homemade circus theme invitations, cut out pictures of circus animals and paste them onto cut cardstock paper. On the backside write with sharpie marker pens:
“You're invited to ____’s Big Top Birthday!”
Underneath write in all your party information.
Face Painting - Either hire a face painter or invite some of your friends to help paint the faces of your guests. Turn them all into the clowns you know they are or you can draw a simple design. Use clown face paint – with lots of bold colors. Draw lots of traditional shapes like circles, squares, triangles and stars.
Balloon Pop Game - Hang numerous balloons all tight together. Then have your guests stand behind a marked area and see if they can toss an object to pop your balloon. Make sure you have a backdrop behind your balloon to protect your wall from any darts that may be tossed.
Clown Hat - Decorate a clown hat
Pin the Red Nose on the Clown - Play the same as pin the tail on the donkey.
Tattoo Booth - Have a mixture of temporary tattoos and henna designs. This is simple, they are easy to apply and will bring fond memories until they are removed. They are easy to remove with soap and water over time or you can use rubbing alcohol.
Inflatable 3 In a Row Game - A very cool game that can be played either inside or outside. The player tosses 6 balls and tries to get 3 in a row to win a prize!
Can Toss Game - Set up 6 cans in a pyramid and let your guests toss 3 balls to knock them over. Make your own by reusing soda cans and re-label them with colorful paper.
Elephant Ring Toss - Game Use a statue of an elephant and try to toss the ring on the elephant’s trunk.
Floating Duck Matching Game - Set a number of bath ducks in a large tub of water. Each duck has a number on the bottom. Each duck has a matching number partner. Have two guests rotate turns to try to find matching ducks. Who will find the most matches?
Water Gun Game - Have some light ping pong balls set up on golf tees. Your guests need to hit the balls off the tees.
Corn Hole or Bean Bag Toss Game - This game is fun and traditional. You could make this game if you are good with tools. Use MDF, sketch your pattern and cut it out of the wood. Then sand the wood smooth. Cover with a paint primer and then sketch your desired design. Then with an outdoor paint, paint in your design.
Circus Balloons - Hire a balloon maker or get a kit to teach yourself how to make all the fun shaped balloons.
Set up a Large Blow-up Bouncing Centre - These can be rented locally or sometimes you can purchase them at a local big box store. These are fantastic at a party. Kids love them and will spend any left over time bouncing. There are many different designs, some are just bouncing and others have a water feature. If there is a water feature, you may wish to inform guests beforehand in case they wish to change clothing or bring a towel.
Circus tent piñata - Make sure you have a scarf to cover your guests eyes and keep everyone back so they aren’t hit during the opening of the pinata. There are also pinatas that you now just need to pull on a string to open from below, then the candy falls out.
Egg Relay Race - Race with eggs on a spoon
Potato Sack Race - Hop in sacks during this race
Tight Rope Walking - Create a balance beam or tight rope course low to the ground. Guests can take turns walking over the course with a balance stick to hold onto while crossing.
Guessing Booth - Have a number of different candies in different sealed jars. Your guests can guess their best estimation of how many candies are in each jar. The closest will win each individual jar of candy.
Live Animal Petting Zoo - Often you are able to hire animals to attend your party. Consider having a mini pony or goat. Make sure you discuss with your guests all the safety rules of being around animals.
Photo Booth - Have a backdrop that has circus themed animals and people with head cut outs. These will make funny photo memories. You can also have dress up clothes if you wish to have other pictures of your guests.
