Little House on The Prairie Party

little house on the prairie

Re-live, love and learn with a Little House on the Prairie party. Everyone in my family loved the TV series and some enjoyed the collection of Little house books. Now, the next generation loves them too. Set your party like the pioneers and have guests come dressed in prairie historical costumes.

Little House on the Prairie Invitations

For invitations, use a picture of an old house or buggy and write:

You’re invited to a Little House on the “your street name".
Come dressed in your prairie best. Load up your carriage, and meet us at ____(the party details).

Have guests come in a summer dress, summer smart clothing or period clothing.

Little House on the Prairie Party Decorations

  • Think nature and antiques for all of your inspirations for this party. Color theme of natural browns, beiges, whites, with pops of green, soft blue and soft pink
  • Tablecloths could be either lace or butcher block paper
  • Lots of different types of glassware. Line your tables with mixtures of crystal to mason jars of different heights and sizes. These can be used for flowers, candles, candies, etc. For flowers, think of natural flowers native to your area, for instance, daisies, queen anne lace, etc.
  • If you are using lots of clear glassware from discount stores for your decorations you can spray them to look like sea glass adding an antique unique look.
  • Use real plates and cutlery. If possible use white, cream or clear plates.
  • This party would look fantastic both inside and outside in nature.
  • Set up tables under trees out on the grass
  • Hay bales
  • Hang twinkle lights and have lots of lanterns for decorations
  • Bonnets for party hats and apron
  • Fiddle
  • Tea service set up

Little House on the Prairie Party Crafts

  • Log Cabins - Make popsicle stick log cabins - these would look amazing as displays and also if the guests are of an age able to make these cabins it would be such a memory. You will need a solid enough base. I would suggest a thick cardboard and you can paint this green. Then have a number of different sized popsicle sticks. You also will want a small cutting tool, like a trim shear (strong scissor). Create your design and then hot glue gun the pieces together. Finally you get to decorate your cabin.
  • Jewelry Making - Make some beaded jewelry or string jewelry. Use a base of DMC floss for the string bracelets and necklaces. These are a number of tying techniques to create your desired design. For the beaded jewelry there is an elastic stretchy string that you can place your beads onto to create your design.
  • Sew an Animal or Doll - Do a sewing craft, as this was the way the pioneers would have made their toys and gifts.
  • Group or Individual Quilt - Make a small quilt by sewing a few patches together. They can learn how to add the middle batting, and sew on a sewing machine or by hand. Make something smaller like a bookmark or hot pot holder. The guests can take them home.
  • Bonnet Design - Make bonnets to wear as your hats. Have different colored ribbons and flowers to add to your hat design.
  • Weave a Design - Using material weave a small patch of a design.

Little House On The Prairie Activities and Games

For a lot of these game ideas, get your inspiration from an old fashion pioneer picnic style of games.

  • Have a three legged race - use material to tie the legs of team mates together,
  • a potato sack race - you can purchase these sacks new and clean now or use old feed bags. We used the old feed bags but they were shorter than I had anticipated, so test them out before the party.
  • Tug of war - use a thick rope and tie a ribbon in the middle
  • Egg and spoon race - use hard boiled eggs or water balloons. For your spoon use large silver serving spoons.
  • Shoe toss - how far can you toss your shoe
  • Bucket water relay - have a bucket filled with water to race to a filling station. How quickly can you fill your bucket of water.
  • Bob for apples - these can be in a bucket with water or hang with string an item to eat
  • Candy estimation station - have a mason jar filled with candy and have your guests guess the correct amount of candy.
  • Gold rush scavenger hunt - sift through sand and water to find your first clue, then follow a number of clues to get to a prize.
  • Gather “firewood” - spread branches or other objects for a contest to see who gathers them the fastest.
  • Stringing buttons - race to see who can string the most buttons on a ribbon
  • Musical chairs
  • Pin the tail
  • Corn hole game with bean bags
  • Spelling bee
  • Square dance / barn dance
  • Photo Booth - have an old fashion backdrop and lots of dress up clothing from the time period. Take pictures of your guests in the pioneer days.
  • Watch an episode of the Little House on the Prairie show
  • Make some homemade food together
  1. Make homemade cheese (will take longer than the party so your can drop this off as a thank you)
  2. Make homemade butter - use a small baby food jar,
