Mary Poppins Party Invitations

Create an invitation with rhyming like a singing saying. Write it on paper that looks like it has been torn (just like the advertisement for Mary Poppins from Jane and Michael Banks). On the outside smudge some black crayon to look like some of the ashes from the fireplace. Or say “Ohhh it’s a Jolly Holiday with ____ . No wonder that it’s ___ that we love!”.

Mary Poppins Party Decorations

  • Hang some umbrellas
  • Get a merry-go-round horse to display in the corner
  • Extra streamers and helium balloons
  • Welcome sign saying welcome to 17 Cherry Tree Lane
  • Hang antique and unique umbrellas upside down to see all of the patterns. You can use chandeliers, and beams to support the uppers.
  • Height measurement: measure your guests and have a sign saying they are “practically perfect in every way”, “extremely stubborn and suspicious”, “rather inclined to giggle and doesn’t put things away”.
  • Have penguins in bow ties throughout your party greeting at the door, by the food station, in the photo booth, etc.
  • Hand a banner that reads “Supercalifragiliticexplaidocious”
  • Hang kites on your wall - make them out of wrapping paper and ribbon
  • Play the soundtrack of Mary Poppins and other great Disney songs.

Mary Poppins Party Games and Activities

  • Flying Umbrella - Get some un-decorated paper umbrellas and have them all set up opened. Let the guests pick their favorite umbrella to paint their design on the outside. They can first draw lightly with pencil, next outline in marker and finally paint.
  • 17 Cherry Tree Lane - Trees are fantastic for our environment. Kids love to help plant a tree. Have small shovels for each and let them take turns digging the hole (have most of it dug before they arrive). Let them help lift the tree into the hole to see how heavy it is. Then everyone gets to fill in the dirt. The favorite part will be watering. Be prepared to get wet. The best part is the memory and watching the tree grow for years to come. The guests will also remember.
  • Carpet Bag - Have a large carpet bag with strange items inside. Show what is inside to everyone and refill the bag. Select one guest to remove an item, while the others are turned the other direction. Then they can guess what is missing.
  • Chimney Sweep - Teach a fun dance using the brooms as a prop. There are so many twirls and jumps that you can do with the brooms. Great way to start a small dance party. They can all add some of their own moves as well.
  • Let's Go Fly a Kite - Get cheap kites for all the guests and have one large detailed kite. As they say, let's go fly a kite. You can get a fun plastic one with characters that the kids love on them. They usually fly really well. Let them all take turns flying the large kite. Ask the guests what they should name the large kite. Ours now is called 'Christy'.
  • Upside Down Tea Party - Get the giggles going at your tea party. Add some soda and funny foods to get the giggles started. Once they start giggling they may never stop. Have a large bowl of sugar cubes on the table. See who can make the largest tower.
  • Bubble Art - a fantastic easy art activity is to get plain extra thin coffee filters. Get dishes filled with water and different shades of food coloring. Drop the water solution onto the coffee filters. Then let the artwork dry. Once dried, glue the round 'bubble art' onto a thick plain black background. They look amazing.
  • Sidewalk Painting - Make Bert proud with your drawings. If the weather permits, get a large tub of fun colors of sidewalk chalk. I then would put all the sidewalk chalk into a larger tub. There are cute ones at the dollar store or even using a large bucket. The larger the container the easier it is for the guests to get the colors that they want.
  • Pony Rides - Go for a pony ride just like in the movie.
  • At home horse race - each guest gets a home make horse. Make the horse using a pool noodle, bend the end downward and tie with a ribbon to look like a horse harness. Then add extra large google eyes and a main with hot glue and ribbons.
  • Spoonful of Sugar Races - You can buy a spoon and egg set to race with or you can use your own kitchen spoons with a sugar cube or plastic easter eggs (place a marble on the inside if you wish to have some weight).
  • Pin the hat on Mary Poppins - play just like pin the tail on the donkey. Make a fantastic Mary hat with her flower sticking out the side.
  • Ring Toss with Penguins - paint bowling ball pins look like penguins and attach them to a wooden base then have a rope ring to toss.
  • Pin the bowtie on the Penguin
  • Photo Booth with Mary, Bert, Jane and Michael along with the penguins. Have a mary-go round horse, lots of ribbons, umbrellas, balloons, etc.

Mary Poppins Party Food

  • Think of serving old fashion Mary Poppins party styled finger sandwiches, fruit and vegetable trays, homemade cookies, etc.
  • Penguin crackers (President’s Choice has some they are just like fishy crackers)
  • Half baby bell cheese and put on a short stick to look like an umbrella
  • For your drinks serve “rum punch”, and lemonade
  • Penguin Poppers - take a large marshmallow and dip it into melted chocolate. Then add candy eyes and a beak.
  • Spoon Full of Sugar Cake Pops - make white cake and vanilla icing into cake pops and then cover them in sugar glitter. Do another quick dip into white chocolate to attach to a spoon.
  • Mary Poppins Cake - Decorate a Carousel Cake.

Mary Poppins Party Favors

Make a nice thank you card to attach to each favor… say something like “Thank you for making my party practically perfect in every way!” It will mimic your invitations.

  • Small kite
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Bubbles
  • Tuppence: chocolate coins
  • Bird feeder and a small bag of bird feed: I would select a small plastic clear one that attaches to your window. The guests can then get a great view of the birds as they are eating.
