Western Party

Yeehaw! Grab your cowboy hat and head to the Wild West because it’s time for a Western party. This is a great party theme to enjoy in the great outdoors, ideally on a farm and surrounded by horses. With a down to earth event, have a fantastic time with your friends and who is kidding who, have a good excuse to wear chaps.

Western Party Invitations

Make your western party invitations fun by having a picture of a cowboy boot, hat, lasso, and horse. At the top of your invitation say, “saddle up ya’ll and come on over for a good old hoedown party”. Make sure to indicate to your guests if you want them to come dressed up in their best cowboy or cowgirl attire.

Western Party Decorations

  • Use the color theme of brown, green and red
  • Have a sign that says “Welcome to the Wild West”
  • Use cowboy hats as party hats
  • Host the party in a barn, ‘shop’, or farm in a country setting or simply in your backyard if the weather is cooperative
  • Inflatable balloon cactus or wooden painted green cactus
  • Wanted posters - when each guest arrives, take their picture in a cowboy hat or bandana. Then, copy and paste the picture into a “wanted” picture frame with a reward. Print all the wanted guest posters and tape them onto a wooden board.
  • Have stacks of hay bales two or three high with an old fashioned wagon wheel leaning against it.
  • Cover tables with plaid tablecloths and have a burlap table runner
  • Have assorted wooden chairs and turn sturdy hay bales into seats by covering the middle (so the ends are still visible to show it is a hay bale) with a thick blanket of the party theme colors.
  • Place tea lights in frost spray painted mason jars
  • Hang twinkle lights along a french or around a tree or both
  • Have a station with glow sticks for if it gets dark
  • Have little signs around that say “saddle up”, “come on ya’ll”, “time for a hoedown”

Western Party Games and Activities

  • Trail ride - Get all the horses settled and saddled up for a trail ride through the countryside. The horses will love the change of scenery. Make sure you bring plenty of water, and snacks for yourself and the horse.
  • Horse riding photos - Hire a photographer or ask a friend to take pictures of everyone on their horses and then individual shots of each guest and their horse. Get these photos developed and they will make great party favors or gifts for later.
  • Cowboy hat decorating - Have plain cowboy hats (one for each guest) and decorating supplies, such as paint, glitter, glue, feathers, stickers, markers, and more. Once everyone is finished decorating their hat, make sure to get a group photo.
  • Fire and music - Carefully light a bonfire and have all the guests gather around. You can ask some guests beforehand to bring their instruments, like an acoustic guitar and have everyone join in and sing some fun familiar songs. Or you can simply set up a small speaker for background music and just relax by the fire.
  • Roast marshmallows - Depending on the size of the fire and number of people, have two or three roasting sticks, having people take turns. This will help spread out the fun and help to make it so the fire space is not too crowded by excited people wanting to roast marshmallows.
  • Hoedown - Play music and get everyone up and dancing. If you want, try to teach people how to do a simple line dance.
  • Backyard games - Have fun western themed backyard games to play, like horseshoes, cornhole, ladder toss, large tic tac toe, etc.
  • You can turn your event into an overnight party by having the guests camp out in tents or under the stars.
